John Fennell, Senior Vice President, Director of Retail Banking, New York Community Bancorp.
OurLIC VIDEO CONVERSATION: John Fennell, Senior Vice President Director of Retail Banking, New York Community Bancorp, Looks at Long Island City
Queens County Savings Bank opened in Flushing 153 years ago. It was the first savings bank chartered by New York State in the Borough of Queens.
John Fennell, New York Community Bancorp, reminds us that "THE CUSTOMER IS KING". At his community bank's branches, his bank's customers are "not just a number...you are a person". Being a community bank gives Queens County Savings Bank a competitive edge. "We can afford to give you that one-on-one service...and it is consistent wherever you go."
Community banks have always been an important part of the communities in which they provide banking services. They have always been the financial backbone for the families and businesses that make communities strong and pertpetually sustainable. Their hallmark is their "local" customer service which is always personal and respectful. Relationships with customers in their communities are deeper and go beyond deposits and withdrawals. Bankers at community banks understand their role in the health, prosperity, and socio-economic development of the communities in which they live and actively participate. Commercial banks have tried to emulate them.
With community banks, the personal touch is important...not just a slogan. The local and personal touch becomes embedded in the operating philosophy of the bank. It takes years to master it. Managing it means hiring, training, and developing the right type of people. It takes the right people, with the right personal commitments and characteristics, to perpetuate a community conscience within a bank. They have to grow through the company so that they know the philosophy.

Long Island City Loves Uncle Louie G
OurLIC recently spent time at the Gantry State Park talking "ice cream" with about 150 young families, enjoying a Saturday event. We were on a mission to distribute some coupons for the Uncle Louie G LIC store owner, Mark Entler.
We expected coupons for ice cream to go fast; and, the idea of giving out coupons for ice cream to people and children in the community was very appealing.
But, the real fun part turned out to be the level of excitement that the Uncle Louie G store was OPEN for the season. EVERYONE we spoke with raved about their favorite ice cream or ices and told us how much they looked forward to going to the store.

It's casual. It's comfortable. It brings a welcoming and friendly Greenwich Village landmark restaurant, bar, and gathering spot to the Long Island City neighborhood which is now blossoming with new and exciting restaurants on Vernon Blvd. The food has that familiar "Corner Bistro delicious" taste that has won it "#1 NYC Burger" awards and praise for decades.
Corner Bistro Brings Greenwich Village to the Village Atmosphere of Hunters Point, Long Island City
Everything is the same!
A Greenwich Village landmark, the Corner Bistro, located at Jane Street / West 4th / 8th Avenue has been beautifully replicated on Vernon Blvd. in Long Island City.
We first learned about the original Corner Bistro sometime before 2002 when we lived in Manhattan and became aware of the annual awards, recognition, and popularity it had acheived. We started to go there. It wasn't just the food that drew us. The celebrities, "soap stars", travelers from all over the world, mixing with the local gentry, made this spot one of the most interesting places in Manhattan, and a fun place to go. We brought friends to enjoy it...and family.
Year after year we made regular visits to the Corner Bistro. The trip was worth it, even when there was a wait. The burgers, the chili, the chili-fries were delicious. The owners were dedicated, and had something "hot".

Deputy Mayor Robert Steel presented the NYC Economic Development Strategy at an Executive Breakfast in Jamaica at York College on December 7, 2011.
During the presentation, the Deputy Mayor referred to the Hunters Point South Development project. Because of a prior statement made at another luncheon in November, and another announcement by Joe Conely at the December monthly meeting at the Community Board #2 meeting, OurLIC asked for official statements.
In a statement to OurLIC after the presentation, Deputy Mayor Steel said:
“Hunters Point South will be the largest affordable housing development in New York City in four decades, and we are thrilled that the 950-unit first phase will be 100% affordable. This means that even more low-, moderate- and middle-income New York families will soon be calling the Queens waterfront home. We will be breaking ground on the first housing phase next year.”

Mayor Bloomberg, Cornell President Skorton And Technion President Lavie Announce Historic Partnership to Build a New Applied Sciences Campus on Roosevelt Island
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Cornell University President David J. Skorton, and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology President Peretz Lavie today announced an historic partnership to build a two-million-square-foot applied science and engineering campus on Roosevelt Island in New York City. The selection of the Cornell/Technion consortium – which pairs two of the world's top institutions in the fields of science, engineering, technology and research – marks a major milestone in the City's groundbreaking Applied Sciences NYC initiative, which seeks to increase New York City's capacity for applied sciences and dramatically transform the City's economy. Cornell/Technion's proposal was among the many strong proposals that were submitted to the City from a number of world-class institutions around the globe as part of the City's groundbreaking competitive process. The Cornell/Technion consortium was ultimately selected due to the large scale and vision of their proposal, the long and impressive track-record of both institutions in generating applied science breakthroughs and spinning out new businesses, the financing capacity of the consortium, the focus of the consortium on the collaboration between academia and the private sector, and the overall capacity of the partnership to execute the project. In addition to the Roosevelt Island site, the City will also provide $100 million in City capital to assist with site infrastructure, construction, and related costs. This is the first selection announcement for the Applied Sciences NYC initiative. Productive discussions are ongoing with other respondents – Carnegie Mellon, Columbia and a New York University-led consortium – and the possibility of additional science and engineering partnerships in the City is still open. Mayor Bloomberg made the announcement at Cornell's Weill Cornell Medical College, and was also joined by Deputy Mayor for Economic Development Robert K. Steel, New York City Economic Development President Seth W. Pinsky, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, State Senator José M. Serrano, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer, Council Member Jessica Lappin, as well as other civic and business leaders.
"Thanks to this outstanding partnership and groundbreaking proposal from Cornell and the Technion, New York City's goal of becoming the global leader in technological innovation is now within sight," said Mayor Bloomberg. "By adding a new state-of-the-art institution to our landscape, we will educate tomorrow's entrepreneurs and create the jobs of the future. This partnership has so much promise because we share the same goal: to make New York City home to the world's most talented workforce..
"Cornell University and our extraordinary partner, The Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, are deeply gratified to have the opportunity to realize Mayor Bloomberg's vision for New York City: to prepare tomorrow's expanding talent pool of tech leaders and entrepreneurs to work with the city's key industries in growing tomorrow's innovation ecosystem," said Cornell President Skorton. "Starting today, we are going to put our plan to work, tapping into our extensive connections throughout the city and build a truly 21st Century campus to fuel the creation of new businesses and new industries throughout the city for decades to come./

People who design playgrounds for toddlers and small children know this too.
Valarie D'Elia, 'Travel with Val' and authority on tourism crosses the East River on the East River Ferry to Long Island City
Behind the Scenes: Valarie D'Elia comes to Long Island City to Report on Tourism for "Travel with Val"
Tourists Find Long Island City A Great Alternative To Manhattan Madness segment by Valarie D'Elia aired on NY1 September 15th and 19th "Travel with Val".
Long Island City tourism is booming. The community is in the midst of a renaissance with hotels being built, and restaurants being opened. Long Island City is attracting people from all over the world for the same reason that people are moving here. It is 3 to 5 minutes across the East River to Manhattan, and a short distance to airports and lots of attractions, dining, and cultural centers in Queens.
When we met Valarie D'Elia at the pre-opening reception of the Z Hotel in July, she asked "What do people do in Long Island City?" We quickly invited her to return for a tour.
In early September, just after Hurricane Irene passed through, Val crossed the East River, by its new Ferry, with Arthur and Marion Rosenfield. For several hours we introduced Val to the Long Island City that we know. Because of OurLIC, we have a privileged view and perspective of LIC and were able to show her, first hand, the answer to her question "What do people do in Long Island City."

Economic Forecast Breakfast with Kathryn Wylde, President & CEO, Partnership for New York City
Seth Bornstein, Executive Director, QEDC
Go to QEDC
Presentation made possible by the Long Island City Business Development Corporation [ LICBDC ] and Queens Economic Development Corporation [ QEDC].
Long Island City, New York March 18, 2010 - Kathryn Wylde, President and CEO of the Partnership for New York City, addressed a gathering of business and organization leaders about the challenges faced due to the economic downturn. Her economic forecast focused on the difficult challenges facing the global community as part of an economic recovery. The meeting was organized by the Long Island City Business Development Corporation [LICBDC] and the Queens Economic Development Corporation.
Ms. Wylde began her address by declaring that she was not an "economist", and not an expert in the local Long Island City market; but, wanted to talk about the larger context of the economy (globally, nationally, and Albany) and how they were effecting the development of strategies going foreward.
On the same day, Partnership for New York City released a PricewaterhouseCoopers Report indicating that New York City Remains a Global Powerhouse, but that issues of cost, livability and sustainability are significant future challenges. Go to March 18th Press Release.
Full video coverage of her address and follow up Q&A are available in the left column in 20 segments of approximately three to five minutes each.
Highlights:
In a global sense, the economic forecast is pretty good.
We are coming out of a two year global recession, and; based on actions of governments and central banks around the world, we avoided avoided a great depression.
We are experiencing a jobless recovery and noone is certain where the jobs of the future will come from in this country.
Our economic growth will come from trade and business relationships with China and India, where growth this century will come from.
The GDP in the US is expected to grow by over 3.0% in 2010. At 3.0% growth, it would take a decade to get back to where we were in terms of jobs in 2007.
We have a longterm prospect of relatively high unemployment, and the social and economic consequences of that.
Nationally, the three big challenges are:
Jobs.
Bringing Consumers back into the market.
Dealing with the continuing credit crunch faced by small business.
Large and mid-sized businesses in most sectors have money to invest, and are preparing for increased activity. But they are not rehiring, and may not rehire in this country at the same levels as before the cuts.
New jobs will take a while. They will come from new start-up companies, new industries taking shape, and foreign companies setting up operations in the US.
THE FIRST COMMERCIAL TENANT CONTRACTED IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER IS A REAL ESTATE COMPANY FROM CHINA THAT WILL BRING CHINESE COMPANIES TO THE US.
New York City and Queens can excell in jobs related to the "export sector".

New Service Promotes Long Island City Performing Arts
OurLIC has launched an important new section of its service to provide an online stage for the growing performing arts community of western Queens. A unique format will permit each theater, studio, or company to have its own virtual stage representing its actual physical stage. Performing companies can add videos, calendars, booking and other content, plus integrate their OurLIC STAGE with their OurLIC Profile and OurLIC Social Networking tools to expand promotional capability and personalize their theater or studio.
Expanding and promoting the performing arts, and the talented people who create dance and theater, is an important way to build the quality of life in LIC; and a great way to strengthen the economy here.
OurLIC is helping to cross promote participating restaurants and hotels with theaters and studios. The service will also highlight promotional offers between theaters like the Secret Theatre and restaurants like Da Gianni Ristorante.
For the past year, OurLIC has provided space for Artists, Photographers and Designers through its popular OurLIC GALLERY.
