Senator Michael Gianaris said

"I am proud to be a part of the Long Island City community, whose ongoing responsible growth has allowed for the tourism boom we continue to experience. Home to major film production sites like Silvercup Studios and Kauffman Astoria Studios, state of the art facilities for organizations like jetBlue and CUNY Law School, and an increasing tech and arts culture, Long Island City is a tourist attraction in its own right. Along with with unmatched views of Manhattan, beautiful green spaces like Gantry State Park and residents who care deeply about our community, Long Island City helps make western Queens one of the best neighborhoods in the country."

According to a U.S. Travel Association study, marketing programs bring in more visitors, generate new tax dollars, and create jobs for states and local communities.

"The research analyzed campaigns conducted by the state of Michigan and the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corp. The 'Pure Michigan' promotion generated 7.2 million trips to Michigan by out-of-state visitors, who spent $2 billion there and generated $138 million in new tax revenue for the state. In 2010, spending by out-of-state leisure visitors jumped 21 percent year-over-year, to $6.4 billion, and created some 10,000 tourism jobs."

Hotels are very important to to the Long Island City economy and to our restaurants, transportation services, merchants of all types, banks, galleries, wedding venues, institutions, cultural centers, and even landscape design companies. Every business, organization, and institution in Greater Long Island City is touched by TOURISM.  It not only leads to a thriving economy, but it means job creation.   The business community wants to engage a stronger relationship with the hotels.

The Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce identified 30 hotels with 3,637 rooms, including the LaGuardia Airport hotels closest to Greater Long Island City.   For every $30.00 spent by guests at the local hotels at our restaurants and businesses, there is $39,825,150 of income for the community’s economy  -  plus the benefits of secondary income and jobs.   Others are under construction and will open in 2013.

General Managers and Sales Managers of these hotels have expressed an interest in knowing more about the anticipated LIC / Astoria Chamber of Commerce local market development plan.

In making the announcement for the two meetings, Arthur Rosenfield, President of the the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce said: "Tourism to our community touches every business, every bank, every store, every small and large company, every institution, every family, every artist, every entertainer, even every child.  Everyone benefits from the economic boost as well as the cultural exchange made possible by tourism to Long Island City's culturally diverse neighborhoods.  These two meetings will kick-off an important new focus on building the DESTINATION appeal of our neigborhoods: Hunters Point, Astoria, Sunnyside, Dutch Kills, and Woodside. We are looking forward to gathering the resources of the business community and others so that we can make an important leap forward in attracting visitors and to share the  wonderful experiences of these neighborhoods, with so much to offer, during 2013."
