Long Island City, NY August 23, 2012 - Tony Meloni breaks the mold of potential candidates for NYC Council. Tony is a grass roots candidate with deep practical experience in the Astoria community as an advocate since the 1980's; and as an entrepreneur committed to helping immigrants. Founded in 1988, his company, Immigration Advocacy Services, provides support services to help people navigate the difficult immigration process. He also founded the New York Anti-Crime Agency in 1984. It helps fight crime, and helps to make the Astoria community safer and more beautiful. At age 56, the spirit of community service lives deep in Antonio Meloni. He is a Member of Community Board #1 and is an active member of several charitable and community service organizations like the Kiwanis Club. He is Vice President Astoria Civic Association, a member of The Taminent Regular Democratic Club, and a member of the 114th Community Council. On April 19, 2012, Tony announced at a meeting of the Long Island City / Astoria Chamber of Commerce that "I am a candidate for New York City Council for District 22, Astoria."  City Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr. has served the maximum number of terms permitted. His City Council seat has attracted candidates. With this article, OurLIC presents a VIDEO CONVERSATION with Tony Meloni.  We think he defines himself and his platform in very persuasive terms. HIGHLIGHTS: Because of his work in Immigration, and in Crime Prevention over the past 25 years, Tony has a valued perspective as a community leader in New York City. He has lived in the Astoria community for 47 years. He had been volunteering all of his adult life because, he says "It is just the right thing to do." He feels that the open City Council seat will permit him to help Astoria even more. Tony says that the area is beautify, but that there are a number of issues.  He points to the environment and the number of asthma cases as an example. He went to all of the local schools and Queens College. He is the Public Safety Chair on Community Board #1. Teachers had a big impact on him. The high crime in the 1980's influenced him. At the time there was a crack epidemic. Last year his company helped people from 119 countries.  "I get such a cultural hit every day" he says. His volunteer work has formed the basis for his candidacy. He says that it is important for us to know that "we, as local citizens, and not the elected officials, can do something individually."  Tony says that he has already demonstrated his abillity to get things done, and that now he believes he can do it at a higher level. Tony says he likes the City Council because the 51 representatives CAN make a difference. He helped pass the law against solid steel gates. It was legislation that Peter Vallone Jr. sponsored and was able to get passed by the City Council. Fundamentally, Tony says he believes "... that being involved makes a big difference." He says that part of the solution to overregulation and fining is to give the owner time to rectify a deficiency before fining. Tony's message to the small business community is that he is one of them, and he understand them.
