Mayor Bloomberg Announces New $5.5 Million Matching Grant Program from Goldman Sachs and others for Small Businesses Impacted By Hurricane Sandy.
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg today announced a new program that will make available $5.5 million in matching grants for New York City businesses most impacted by Hurricane Sandy. This grant program - which is being funded with $5 million from the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City, as well $500,000 from the Partnership for New York City - will be administered by the New York Business Development Corporation and was developed in collaboration with the City's Economic Development Corporation and Department of Small Business Services. The matching grants are designed to provide additional financial assistance for local businesses already seeking low-interest loans through the City's existing Emergency Loan Fund. The Mayor also announced today that in addition to the $10 million Emergency Loan Fund launched by the City and Goldman Sachs immediately following the storm, an additional $5 million has been committed to the loan fund by a consortium of New York financial institutions through the New York Bankers Association, bringing the total amount of loans, grants, and other financial assistance available to businesses most affected to more than $45 million

Temporary Construction Detour - Center Blvd/50th Ave
On Monday, July 18th the Hunter’s Point South Redevelopment Project will implement a temporary detour on Center Boulevard/50th Avenue between 49th Avenue and 2nd Street. The detour is necessary in order to allow for installation of a new 15” storm sewer down the middle of 50th Avenue because the street is not sufficiently wide to allow for construction and maintaining traffic flow simultaneously. The detour will involve a full closure weekdays during construction hours. Nights and weekends, a single traffic lane (south then eastbound) will be maintained. (Refer to the attached diagrams.) We expect the detour to remain in place approximately one month.
In preparation for the detour, parking will be eliminated on both sides of 50th Avenue (Center Boulevard to 2nd Street) effective 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, July 14th. Please relocate your vehicle by 7:00 a.m. Vehicles are subject to towing.

Borough President Marshall Matches Van Bramer’s Contribution
Helen B. Marshall, Queens Borough President, at a ceremony today, swore in Members of the New York City Council as "Friends of the Queens Library"...a first for all boroughs. This is the first time ever that a group of City Council Members have formed their own chapter of the Queens Library Friends.
During the ceremony, Council Member Van Bramer made a personal donation from he and his partner for $1,000 to the Buy a Book fund. Queens Borough President Helen Marshall matched his donation with a $1,000 personal contribution to the Queens Library emergency book fund.
Speaker Christine Quinn told the group that she vividly remembers a bookcase, in the library she went to as a child, that was filled with books about people who changed the world. She said she read about all of these world leaders and what they each did. That was what caused her to pursue her own career in politics.

Statue Commemorating the Famous March 8, 1971 Ali vs. Frazier Fight for Long Island City?
March 8th 2011 is the 40th Anniversary of the famous Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier Fight, fought in Madison Square Garden.
Bill Gallo wrote in his Sunday, February 20, 2011, THE GALLO PAGE for the Daily News "The one man who always comes through in this city, Mr. Donald Trump, called me in response to the suggestion I made in last weeks column for an Ali-Frazier Statue. I am pleased to tell you that he is interested in the project and is studying it."
Gallo's prior article, "Ex-boxers pledge help with monumental task", shows a drawing of a statue and states that Ring 8 is ready to get behind the project.
When it comes to Boxing, Tony Mazzella is the qualified expert. Tony is Deputy Commissioner of Athletics, an active Board member of Ring 8, and the owner of The Waterfront Crabhouse. He points out that the Statue project actually began in 2006 when he and the Ring 8 Board began seeking help from a marketing organization to pursue the Ali / Frazier Statue.

OurLIC Conversations with Artists: Donna Levinstone Defines Sky and Earth in her Exhibit at the New Jeffrey Leder Gallery
Following a well-received Inaugural Opening, Jeffrey Leder featured Donna Levinstone’s dramatic and highly-evocative pastel drawings for the Gallery’s first solo exhibit starting on December 5th.
Over 30 pieces are shown in the main room of the impressive Long Island City space, including both her black and white and color work.
Donna Levinstone’s works of art concern themselves more with a spirit of place than an actual place ~ they are not descriptive of a specific location or place as much as they strive to create an essence of light and atmosphere. Her current work is centered around the relationships between tranquility and volatility, the ethereal and the earthly, light and dark, and night and day. Through the reflected light in her atmospheric drawings, Levinstone invites the viewer to explore the duality of what is permanent in our world and what is ever changing in it.
Levinstone says “As I layer my pastel drawings with darkness and light, I explore beauty, transition and the powerful forces of nature.”
OurLIC Interviewed Levinstone at her Exhibit. The conversation interview is presented with this article.

Long Island City / Astoria Treated to an International Indie Film Festival
Over 50 International Indie Films Presented
Over 50 International Indie Films were presented at The First Annual LIC / Astoria Film Festival. They included feature films, documentaries, shorts, music videos and more. Attendance was estimated to be approximatedly 600 people during the weekend.
OurLIC attendend the Film Festival and viewed a selection of films on both days. The films we saw were excellent on all levels. We invited Long Island City's favorite son Tony Vaccaro, the world famous photograph and gifted photo journalist, to join us. At 88, Tony still enjoys a good film and loves to experience the work of other talented people. We consider his judgement on things like art and film to be insightful because of his lifelong experience and pursuit of photo-journaling and profiling the most important and most talented people of his epoch. He has photo profiled virtualy every major film director during his career. His view of this Film Festival seemed to be important.
Tony agreed that the scripts, acting, direction, technical execution and other elements were engaging and compelling. Tony added: "Wonderful!" Several of the films brought to light serious topics that left us both feeling that others...everyone...should view them.
