The City of New York is complex. Qualifications for City Council encompass many disciplines and skills. In our video chat, we hope to capture the essential character, skills, and vision of Brent O'Leary as a person who wants your vote to elect him as your City Council Member. The following represent general areas of question for the chat we had with Brent.
What is the City Council Members job description? How often does the City Council meet? What is the day-to-day work like for a New York City Council Member?
Is there a specific committee that you hope to serve on? Why?
What kind of problem solving experience have you had which resembles the balancing the interests of lobbyists with the people in a neighborhood?
How will you continue to gather the opinions, ideas, and feedback from your constituency and neighborhoods if you are elected?
Why should the public believe that you will vote 'independently' and with your own mind and set of convictions rather than with the "leadership"? Is there something in your career and life experience that show us an example of your independent spirit?
Are people telling you that they want NYC Government to change? If so, in what way do they want change? Are there things that really can be changed after all of the campaigning is over?
What were the three most important decisions made by the The City Council during the last 5 years?
How would you have voted? Why?
What do you consider will be the three most important decisions in the next two years? Why?
Have you participated in any hearings that the current City Council may have had? What was the circumstance?
How can jobs be created at an accelerated pace in Long Island City?
Long Island City is in a state of transition. How can the Long Island City community make Smarter Progress?
Is there a unique characteristic about Long Island City that would be especially attractive for an industry to be centered here?
We've seen the Mayor's office promoting access to capital for business, but I've also seen that banks are still restrictive with credit for small and medium size businesses that are critical to the community. How can a City Council Member change this?
OurLIC would like to see the entire Long Island City area be designated as a Federal, NY State, and NYC "Commercial Opportunity Zone" for small business.

Micro Industry & Micro Arts Development Plan tied to 'City of the Future' theme
- Developer Pool of Funds for space conversion of existing locations.
- Micro Loans.
- Tax advantages.
- Affordable Small Business Support.
- Affordable Homes.
- Tied to Library and Community Center.
- Seed funded by 'Shovel Ready' commitments.
- Support for Innovation.
Would you be supportive of something like this?
The New York City Economic Development Corporation is a hybrid private / public corporation which contracts with The City of New York. Could you explain the relationship between the New York City Economic Development Corporation and the City Council?
What is the single most important thing you would like to accomplish if you are given the chance to be the new City Council Member.
What improvements to the school systems would be part of you commitment to parents.
What improvements to the business environment would be part of you commitment to entrepreneurs.
Are there any large budget items that you plan to support?
Even through there has been rapid development of Hunters Point (and promised investment in Hunters Point South), there is also infrastructure neglect and deterioration. There are parts of Hunters Point where the sidewalks are dangerous to walk because they have not been repaired for many, many years. There are other issues. Which infrastructure issues will you, as a City Council Member, tackle so that this imbalance of infrastructure investment in Hunters Point is corrected.
Is there any comment that you would like to make about the Health Care system and the current debate in Congress? The impact on taxes here in New York City?
